How It Works

When we clench or grind our teeth, our ear canal changes shape (it gets smaller).

This is because our Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits directly below our ear canals.
You can feel this movement yourself, by placing your finger in your ear canal as you open and close your mouth.

Clenching/grinding (bruxism) can be an involuntary action that you don’t even realise you are doing. This can also occur while you are sleeping, often leading to a bad nights sleep and waking up with a variety of symptoms.

It can be difficult to treat, because you may be completely unaware you are doing these parafunctions. If you seek advice from a healthcare professional, if they don’t treat the root cause, the symptoms will keep coming back.

Dentists are in a good position to see the physical signs in your mouth, gums and teeth, but often patients will not talk about the symptoms they are suffering with (as they don’t see it as being relevant). By seeing the physical signs and knowing the symptoms, TMJ dysfunction can be better diagnosed.

How BruxIT Works

There are three devices to choose from (small, medium & large). Your ear canal size will determine which device is the most suitable for you.

The devices have been made to be slightly bigger than the ear canal in a closed position. So when you go to subconsciously clench/grind your teeth, the ear canal will push against the devices, causing a cognitive awareness that it is in a uncomfortable position. The way the brain corrects this, is by returning the mouth to a slightly open position. Overtime this will help train the brain to not clench/grind, to help break the cycle.

As the cycle starts to break, the symptoms will start to alleviate. To find out if you are suitable candidate, please do not hesitate to contact us today.
